The Essence of Caring

I realize that I haven't been a nurse for a very long time but I am beginning to realize that caring means so many different things to different people. To patients, it means helping them get well or helping them achieve the best quality of life. To nurses, it means supporting and encouraging each other so that they are motivated to deliver the very best care. To the general public, it means a fierce dedication and committment to the safety and wellbeing of anyone who is in need of help. To me, it means all of the above and more importantly, I know that by helping others I am also helping myself. These are just some of the values that help me to remain passionate and enthusiastic about my chosen profession of nursing. I have a feeling that once I lose this passion and enthusiasm, it will be time for me to quit or retire from nursing. I for one hope that this does not happen for a very long time.
